Hej! We’re in Stockholm

in artlab project by

During our stay in Stockholm, we try to figure it out how the Art Spaces or Art Institutions works and contribute to the development of art in Stockholm specifically and Sweden in a broader context.

After several interview, talking over coffees and some glass of wine, reading a lot of references and books (googling is counted!) we find a pattern that lead to… first conclusion a.k.a still raw materials

Now we sort of thinking that we will do the cluster of 4 kinds of art producer

a. Art Space

This cluster is typically artist driven-space / institution / initiative that (we sense) the notion is to support the artist by exhibiting the artworks by displaying them in the space. Several spaces claimed that they are non-profit institution and the other have funding to have sustainability.

We will continue to do the interview during Supermarket Art Fair, consider Supermarket is the significant event to represent the activity of Artist-driven Space at the moment in Sweden context, and even broader Nordic and Internationally. They celebrated 10 year anniversary this year!

Quoted from the website http://www.supermarketartfair.com/

What is Supermarket?

The goal of SUPERMARKET, the international artist-run art fair, is to provide a showcase for artists’ initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for new networks in the Swedish as well as the international art scene.

The exhibitors are generally not-for-profit exhibition spaces. In addition to the exhibition, the event includes a seminar programme, a performance art stage and a meeting programme for networking.

b. Out and About Space

Quoted Per Hasselberg (Artist and Founder of Konsthall C) “These institutions (Konsthall -ed) were seen as an important instrument to shape the democratic citizens. In fact, it is stated in all the surveys that have been conducted since the 1940’s that culture must reach out to the suburbs, and in turn this has been dealt with in different ways”

As the days wen by, we have several sample that not only Konsthall but also 2 unique sample that run with the ideas to have contemporary art as a tool to work with the interdisciplinary approach, looking at local resources but at the same time bring the global context to the space.

Konsthall CMarabouparken, Botkyrka Konsthall, and Tensta Konsthall. We will also take Fargfabriken and Index Foundation for the investigation.

c. Funding Institution

Talking about the cash and sustainability of the program, we got it! several names came up based on interview. Riksutställningar: The Swedish Exhibition Agency,  Konstfrämjandet, Statenskonstrad: Public Art Agency Sweden, and last but not least IASPIS. Consider this institution is closed to the idea of having and giving money for art development.

d. Art-Driven Initiative

This is very unique sample, they’re are the kind of institution that bring art into their approach, and use art to integrate with their vision and hosted the program such exhibition, talk, research etc.

Stockholm School of Economy posing simple question why do we have art in the non-art institution? the answer nothing but the believe that art can interwoven with the humanity by increase, exchange, produce and transfer the knowledge.

Nordic Art Association is the is an organization dedicated to the visual arts in the nordic countries aiming to create networks. Now they keen to become the intersection for all different types of art institution by asking them to become partner organization. These partner contribute by producing program and proposing names of art professional for residency that relating to their vision as an institution.

 The Unstraight Museum

The Unstraight Museum is a space dedicated to LGBTQ issues and explore the role of cultural institutions, curators, and archivists in representing marginalized communities. They promoting diversity by playing with the notion of “museum” and working with the neglected history and stories unstraight people.
